Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
