Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing these medications need to be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Experts propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced something flipping and you become ravenous," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
